10R State Title

Seven skippers lined up for the 2021 10R State Title at Tiranna Way and were met by a shifty N to NE to E breeze that required many course changes.

Jeff Watson was out early with radio issues. Alan Bessel also retired with radio gremlins.

Most of the fleet traded places and had their moments in the sun with a mix of 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th places. The battle for third was close with four points separating Chris Juttner from Bob Whitehead. This would have been closer had right-of-way Bob not suffered damage but chose not to pursue a protest for a redress. Tim Arland scored seconds and thirds and that was enough for an overall second place.

But there was nothing the fleet could do about Tony White, who won every race convincingly and secured first place. Well sailed, Tony!

The sailing was orderly with penalties taken when required.

John Gratton was RO with Johan Bergkvist and Peter Hendy assisting.

A Class State Title

Sadly only 6 starters for the 2021 A Class State Championships won convincingly by Tim Arland with 8 bullets, Greg Peake had 2 wins before boat breakdown curtailed his racing and Jeff Watson only lasted one race longer. Other heat winners (one each) were Bob Whitehead in his excellent and new to him Sword and Chris Juttner.

The breeze was northerly varying to the NW and requiring a few minor course changes, but only using the buoys already set. Everyone started with A rigs but the breeze increased as forecast and there were rig changes to a mixture of small jib only (Alan Bessell), small main with smaller jibs (Tim Arland, Jeff Watson and Chris Juttner) and persisting with A rigs (Greg Peake and Bob Whitehead) because they had no choice. As you’ll see from Johan’s movies of races 9 and 10 the breeze moderated enough for Bob’s A rig to be dominant, at least for a while and his new boat obviously has great promise.

Many thanks to Norman Wallis as PRO, Ian Dowsett as assistant and helpers Dean Crichton and Ecio Marcel and tug and tablet driver and photographer Johan Bergkvist. Everything went very smoothly and we chose not to deploy the dinghy, and did not need it.

And good to meet Brian Outram who is the new ARYA Events Coordinator.

DF95 State Title

Really awesome to see 12 boats make the start line for the 2nd running of the championship!

Morning session started on A rigs - earliest casualty for the day young Cameron White who salt dipped his transmitter (better luck next year). Johan Bergkvist opened the account strongly with several heat wins and 2nd places. Tony White, Phil Burgess, John Wyatt achieving heat wins and several top finishes setting the tone for the racing to come.

Afternoon session had a quick change to B rigs (for those who had them) as the local sea breeze freshened beyond what the BOM predicted. Phil started to make his move (however he did punctuate his performance with some interesting blemishes). B rigs saw Anthony Wilson and Guy Wallis both making charges up the leaderboard. Tony read the conditions and swapped down to a C (where he charged forward then to have a fried rudder servo putting a DNF on the board) the subsequent rig change time and gave him sufficient time for DF95 open heart surgery - with several skippers helping him fix the boat. That was the difference to help Tony defend his DF95 title in 2021. All done and dusted after 20 heats (on just about every rig in the bag).

Honerable mentions: Stephen Cibich (receiving a DF transmitter strap) for buying the boat without explicit permission from the better half). Mike Marshall (ONBO DF battery) for helping out the class and keeping everyone enthusiastic through the fleet. Bruce Backman (ONBO DF battery) for grabbing a loan DF95 and learning vertically - now you need to go buy one!

Big Thank You to the RO, Ian Dowsett!

DF65 State Title

Really well supported with 10 boats for the 2nd running of this event!

In the morning session Danny James, Tony White, Johan Bergkvist, Phil Burgess came out of the blocks with tight battles at front of the fleet on A+ rigs last bracket before lunch saw some skippers changing down to A rigs as the breeze built, others skipped straight to B.

Tim Arland RO called lunch after 16 races were down. The skippers were indecisive to rig selection after lunch some put bets on building Sea Breeze for the bracket choosing B rigs others chose to stay on A, other went with trying to cover the holes in the breeze with their A+.

Johan was the man to catch at that point but had to leave the competition for family commitments (he was in the box seat at that point and the man to catch). Phil Burgess, Tony White, Danny James, were the men to watch steadily shadowing each other each subsequent heat. 7 different heat winners were welcomed to the winner circle - while small little battle groups also developed where bragging rights taken seriously. In the end Tony White 1st to Danny James 2nd by a single point! Phil Burgess 3rd 6 points behind!

Honourable Mentions for the Day: Nathan Bunt after sailing DFs for only about a month finishing every race and having moments up the front! (ONBO battery and DF Neck Strap to help his DF journey). James How for stealing his dad's DF and having a crack - and earning a couple of heat wins! (ONBO battery - James now you need to purchase a boat for the battery!)

IOM Club Championship

Twenty five skippers sailed in at least one race which means that non starters scored 26 points for the races they missed. I’ve included skippers who have possibly left the club or may be close to exceeding their allowed 3 days racing without joining. But these only affect the lower results.

The clear winner was Tony White on 10 points with 1 win and nothing worse than 4th from the 4 events. Second on 14 points was Norman Wallis. Third on 17 points was Tim Arland. Dave Lane, Ecio, Ian Dowsett and John Inverarity showed the advantage of competing in each day’s racing in this no drop series.

Marblehead Club Championship

Eighteen skippers sailed in at least one race which means that non starters scored 19 points for the races they missed. I’ve included skippers with the boat numbers they sailed in most races since many sailed more than one boat in the series. But there are exceptions for which I apologise: I can’t find a way of overcoming this in the A Fleet software.

The clear winner was Tim Arland on 9 points. Second on 22 points was Ian Dowsett. Third on 23 points was Ecio Marcel.

Only these first 3 and myself in 4th and Alan Bessell in 5th place showed the advantage of competing in each day’s racing in this no drop series. Everyone else carried at least one 19.

Gold Cup IOM Mid Week Scratch Series

Twenty four skippers sailed in at least one race which means that non starters scored 25 points for the races they missed. I’ve included skippers who have possibly left the club or may be close to exceeding their allowed 3 days racing without joining. But these only affect the lower results.

The clear winner was Tim Arland on 16 points with 5 wins from the 10 events. Second on 21 points with 2 wins was John Gratton. Both Tim and John changed boats during the series, as did Alan Gold but I have ignored those boat changes. Dave Lane was third on 23 points with one win, very consistent. Not missing more than 2 days racing and therefore not having to carry a 25 was critical in finishing reasonably up the order board.

Overall a great initiative and well supported through the year with 16 entrants for the last event.

Trevor Jeffries Handicap

Twenty two skippers sailed in at least one race which means that non starters scored 23 points for the races they missed. I’ve included skippers who have possibly left the club or may be close to exceeding their allowed 3 days racing without joining. But these only affect the lower results. Where skippers acted as ROs or PROs they got average points for the whole event. But most of the races were run by Alan Gold and using his simple handicapping system. So there was little averaging.

That handicapping system was remarkably effective: the first three finishers were all on 24 points and were separated on countback.

The winner was Dave Lane on 24 points, very consistent, but with 2 wins from the 9 events. Second also on 24 points with 1 win was John Brolese, beating on countback Ecio Marcel, also on 24 points but with 0 wins. Not missing more than 2 days racing and therefore not having to carry a 23 was critical in finishing reasonably up the order board.

Overall a great initiative and well supported through the year.

DF95 Spring Trophy

Thirteen skippers sailed in at least one race which means that non starters scored 14 points for the races they missed. Three of those skippers sailed the same Club DF95 variously numbered #44, #144, #244.

The clear winner was Jeff Ireland on 6 points. Tony White was second on 8 points. Johan Bergkvist was third on 20 points, despite having two 14s, once while David Clayton sailed his boat.

Only the first two competed in each day’s racing. I have allowed one drop in this 5 race series. Everyone else carried at least one 14.

DF65 Spring Trophy

Thirteen skippers sailed in at least one race which means that non starters scored 14 points for the races they missed.

The clear winner was Tony White on 7 points. Anthony Wilson was second on 9 points. Johan Bergkvist was third on 13 points.

This was to be a 5 race series but only 4 races were sailed, race 3 being abandoned. So I have not allowed any drops.

IOM Club Championship

Round 1

Glorious warm to hot condition greeted 15 skippers. Big welcome back Peter White (40) who had a forced absence for most of last season due to COVID and New Club member Mick Noy (86).

Light 3-12 knots welcomed the skippers starting in the North East swinging through to a steady South Westerly breeze The racing was close and tactical all day with no real favoured sides. Mick, Bob Whitehead Norm, Tim and Tony managed to share the heat wins out amongst them. After the heats were done:Tim (55) won a count back (over Ross Eldridge 185) for 4th, David Lane (51) 3rd, Norm Wallis (282) 2nd and Tony White (176) 1st with his new KanTwo! Please refer to our Facebook Page where Johan has placed full HD videos of heats 2, 3 and 4.

Round 2

RO Bob Watson had a trying day with very light breezes with varying direction. Luck to get the 12 heats in as the last two looked as though they may need abandonment due to almost no wind. The results show that the honours for first place were shared between many with good and bad results dependent on where the wind was.

Round 3

17 Boats faced the starter for the third heat of the IOM Club Championship, ably run in very difficult conditions by Steve Arthur and Greg Peake. Great to welcome back Scott Mitchell and new dual members Simon and James How from ARCYRC.

The wind was very very light and patchy, mainly N to NNW but moving left during the day WSW. It rarely got above 4 knots and there were big holes especially around the windward mark. A rigs all day. Only 7 races completed. Apart from Scott Mitchell there were some new boat/skipper combinations. John Gratton with his new ex-Alan Gold K2 and Tim Arland with his brand new KanTwo. Race winners were Scott with 3 wins, Tim with 2 wins, and John Gratton and James with 1 win each.

Scott again won easily but this time with only 3 bullets. We’d be very happy to welcome other ARCYRC sailors during your winter recess.

Round 4

Good to be back sailing after our 7 day lockdown. Sunny day, no rain but cold. Social distancing was pretty well respected and we didn’t need to mandate mask wearing.

The breeze was NW tending to the West, maybe 6-9 knots, moderating as the day went on.

The IOMs had 17 entries for their 4th Club Championship heat. It was run well by Anthony Wilson and John Fry: thank you both. The left shifting breeze required several course changes. 10 races were completed with 2 drops. Winner with 13 points and 4 wins was John Gratton in his new ex Alan Gold K2, luckily only breaking a sidestay and retiring from the last race. Second on 27 points with 2 wins was Johan Bergkvist in his Adriatic. Third on 34 points was Danny James in his KanTwo. Tony White was 4th on 39 points with one win, fifth on 47 points with one win was Jamie How. Other heat winners were Dave Lane and Simon How.

All in all a good day, and pleasing to see so many boats on the water in both the IOM and DF65 events.

Round 3

A miserable day, freezing cold, rain, hail and strong winds mainly SW 18 to maybe 30 knots. We wer. e all pretty happy to stop after 5 races which gave a result, the wind and rain were building. Enormous thanks to Jeff Watson who came to sail but had electrical problems and stood in for our absent ROs.

11 boats turned up but the conditions dominated. Johan and Tony with Greg Peake’s borrowed Nioutram lacked smaller rigs than C1s and failed to finish any races. Ecio only had a C3 and was underpowered, as was Alan Bessell when he tried his C3. Simon How damaged his C2 and struggled to finish races with a C1. Those of us with C2 rigs had good and controllable sailing with few dramas, except………. Collisions causing poor finishes and winch switch off after a very high pressure downwind in race 5.

But when they were working and had the right rigs the Marbleheads handled the tough conditions well.

Overall winner John Gratton with 2 wins, Tim Arland second with 1 win, James How third with 1 win, Ian Dowsett fourth with 1 win.

Round 4

An interesting day on the water today for the 4th heat of the RM club champ's, the wind started from the east very gusty pushing the guys to their limits on the A rigs and patience with the shifts.

After the first block of 4 races it was even across the board then the wind clocked South with a course change we could get some good works which let Johan stretch his legs but Alan Bessell, Ecio and Ian were able to claw a win off him but in the end Johan was just too good coming away with a win.

There was some good clean racing had by all with the odd hook up but overall, a great day on the water had by all Big thanks to Dean Crichton and Kai Duffield for helping to make the racing run smooth.

10R Club Championship

Round 1

Initially there was no breeze but Ross sensibly postponed the start until a light SW came in allowing satisfactory courses and good racing. The breeze increased as the day went on and there were rig downsizes required, notably Alan Bessell coming second in the last two 10 Rater racers with his RM under B rig. Unfortunately for Alan only 9 races were counted but place would not have changed.

You’ll see that race 3 has unusual results: 2 first places and no 8th place. This happened because of an incident at the first windward mark where Jeff Watson had to evade a maverick swimmer, leading to Jeff on Port hitting Tim Arland on Starboard putting Tim in irons. Jeff kept doing penalty turns until Tim eventually got out of irons. They were by then well behind everyone and finished 8th (Tim) and 9th (Jeff). Tim sought and was awarded redress. Since he’d won the first two races he was awarded 1st, equal with Tony White who won this race. Soooo…………. That explains the results and why there are two 1sts and no 8th in Race 3.
The event was won by Jeff Watson who won 3 heats and was very consistent, counting only 1sts and 2nds . Tony White was second with 3 wins and Tim Arland third with 3 on water wins and one redress win. Tim had steering problems late in the day.

Ecio Marcel sailed well with a standard RM A rig to beat Ian Dowsett with his dual rated RM. Good to see Daryle Bampton on the water with his new ex-Frank Brookes boat.

Overall a nice day’s sailing and great to see 9 IORs (4 RMs) on the water.

Round 2

13 Boats took to the water in perfect 10R conditions

Great to see new faces in the fleet today and some not so new faces take to part in today's racing. So many skippers either swapped boats or sailed their newly acquired boats - which gave the scoresheet some early challenges!

Racing started in nice 10kn SW breeze where close tactical racing was the order of the day - some crowded starts made for some general recalls and several individual ones throughout the session.

Peter White opened his account with a 1st and 2nd, showing his intentions to be on the podium finally rounding out the top 3.

Johan Bergkvist with his newly acquired Indie had a solid second on the podium!

Winner of the day was Chris Juttner with his newly acquired Sanga (I guess winners are grinner's - because Chris' smile was huge! when he heard the result at the waters edge!)

Thanks for Tony White (RO) and Norm Wallis (Scoring)

Round 3

Only 7 starters but a beautiful sunny day with a NW breeze of 6-10 knots varying to the right and left, but more to the left as the day went on requiring a course change for the last 2or 3 races.

Johan Bergkvist sailed brilliantly in his standard Marblehead with A rig recording 5 consecutive wins and dropping a second and a third. Chris Juttner was 2nd beating Tim Arland on a countback with 3 wins to Tim’s 2, and much helped by Tim having radio problems and being unable to finish the last two races.

Tony White and Danny James officiated, for which many thanks.

Round 2

There were only seven A Class at Paris Tiranna Way today. We sailed in a N to NW of maybe 4-10 knots, varying further west and lightening as the day went on. The course was up and down the shore making for good watching and accurate mark roundings, until the last 3 races when the course was changed to use mark 5 as the windward mark.

The results were self evident. Tim was not really faster than Bob Whitehead who did win 2 races, or me, but he sailed much better with essentially no mistakes and the ability to ware us down if we did get in front. So Tim had 10 bullets for a perfect score. Jeff Watson was steadily mid fleet, improving towards the end. Alan Bessell lost races in the middle through battery problems but did better at the end. Daryle had some steady races. Bob Watson’s new boat was struggling to go to windward.

Thanks to Ecio Marcel and Johan Bergkvist who did a great RO job and called penalties to the fleet’s agreement.

Round 3

Sadly only five of the majestic A Class turned up for beautiul light and variable 4-7 knot N Westerly swinging to the West NW as the morning went on. The event was extremely well run by Alex Hayter and Ecio Marcel, and the competitors appreciated active calling of contacts and penalties. Alex even stopped the racing at one stage for a threatening lecture.

The results speak for themselves. Tim Arland won 11 races, dropping one win and one second. While Alan Bessell, Bob Whitehead and Chris Juttner each led races on occasion only once was Tim beaten. Well sailed mate!!

Round 4

Cold and strong winds greeted the 6 intrepid A Class sailors, WNW 12-18knots, actually less than was forecast.

Tim Arland spectacularly won every race, dropping 2 firsts. Alan Bessell was second, Chris Juttner third, Alex Hayter fourth in Alan Gold’s Gunboat despite only having an A rig. Alex seemed to get better as the day went on. Daryle Bampton was 5th, Jeff Watson 6th, again plagued by electrical failure.

Particular thanks to Brian Walsh, John Inverarity for braving the weather to run the event.

We were all happy to stop after 8 races and 2 drops.

DF95 Club Championship

Round 1

A variable and increasing ESE to SSW breeze starting at 8-14 knots and building through the afternoon to 16-20 knots.  Very shifty.  All started with A rigs and then changed unanimously to B rigs after about Race 6.

Tony White had the perfect score, 10 bullets and dropped a 3rd and a second.  Other race winners were Anthony Wilson and Johan Bergkvist.  Anthony beat Guy Wallis into 3rd place overall by 1 point.  Both were very consistent.  Jeff Watson had an excellent beginning and end and a bad middle.  He beat Johan who lacked his usual speed by just 1 point.  Cameron White had some excellent races, including a third, and did well to finish 6th given more than his share of penalties.  John Moore and Norman Wallis were the next two followed by John Inverarity in only his second sail in the class and he probably deserved to do better.  John was lying 2nd and 3rd in some races but couldn’t stay there.  But he finished every race.

The fleet exhibited good behaviour with prompt penalties, no shouting, no protests and general good sportsmanship.  My helper Ian Dowsett commented favourably on this matter. Thank you Ian for your excellent help.

Overall, very enjoyable and interesting to watch, except for Tony’s dominance.  The boats seemed robust, only one technical problem causing Norman Wallis to miss 3 races, but everyone else completed all 9.

Round 3

The 3rd round of the DF 95 Class Club Championship was sailed in light but reasonably stable wind apart from a couple of rogue whirlies that caught some of the sailors unaware. Nothing like a bit of variety to keep us on our toes!

Seven sailors fronted up, competition was fierce such that there was a change in the lead in each of the first four races. This kept all sailors continuously watching for wind shifts and pressure changes. The pressure was no less at the rear of the field with Cameron White and John Inverarity carrying out their own struggle for lifting up from the tail of the field. Each of these sailors had moments of brilliance which were good to watch. The mid field sailors were also good to watch, mini battles occurring continuously.

The fleet is getting tighter and hungrier for the top step! Four separate skipper achieved heat wins with all skippers were near the top at times. Podium was only sorted out from a count back where Anthony's heat wins gave him the second step over Guy Wallis in a hard fought series of heats. Tony managed to hold out with a consistent sail in the top 3 all day, managing bullets when opportunity knocked!

Congratulations to all competitors for a well sailed event, penalties were all acknowledged and promptly carried out with minimal disruption.

Round 4

The last heat of the DF95 Club Championship was held from 1:30 to 3:30pm on Sunday 14th November. We used only a 1 minute countdown which worked fine with the small fleet and allowed us to complete 12 races in 2 hours. It was very cold and windy, S to SSW, 8-18knots, little rain, with B rigs the order of the day although Jeff Watson started with an A rig but (fortunately) broke his mainsheet just before the first race and quickly changed to a B rig like the others. The weather surely explained the low number of entries.

It was a battle royale between Johan and Tony, each having 5 wins, each dropping a 3rd and a 4th, but Johan only carried one 3rd to Tony’s two and so won the day with 16 points to Tony’s 17. The racing was generally close and Jeff and Anthony each won a race and had second placings. When there was separation on the course it was mostly due to boats getting into irons; they were sometimes hard to tack.

So Tony White added the DF95 Club Championship to his 10R State Championship, DF65 and IOM Club Championships. Johan was second, Anthony 3rd despite missing one heat.

On water behaviour was exemplary: no shouting, no arguments, penalties done with alacrity and calls of “Your mark X”. which made it all a pleasure for the shivering PRO.

DF65 Club Championship

Round 1

The SW breeze was building and in the prestart period A+, A and B rigs were all evident. No one started with an A+ rig, but there were As and Bs for the first  few races. However, John Moore had a convincing win from behind in Race 2 with a B rig. Everyone then changed to B rigs although the wind went to the SE and moderated towards the end which led to A+ rigs coming out:  it may have a premature decision!

There were 8 boats entered but unfortunately Bob Watson had an electrical failure because of water ingress.  Cameron White also had water problems and only managed the first 2 races.  And Tim Arland sailing Bob Appleby’s boat also had water problems and couldn’t sail races 7, 8 and 9.  But he had 3rd and 4th places and said he enjoyed his participation.   There was close racing between Tony White (4 wins) and Johan Bergkvist (3 wins).  John Moore won the other race.  Mark Easton was a safe and convincing 3rd overall with his black sails.

Round 2

Skippers were met with little to no breeze at first - The zephyr of breeze started to fill from the North West Eventually there was enough to lay a course for a Westley

Tony opened the account with a 1st, with Anthony and Johan on his transom! In the first 5 heats we had 3 different heat winners - no noticeable differences in boat speed between the lead bunch - it was playing the right shift first! Mark Easton managed to get his fingertips onto the podium but pipped before the line to get solid 4th - John and Cameron struggled in the light conditions, however Cameron took great delight in beating Tony (dad) in Race 12 by a quarter boat length!

The wind started to fill from the SW! With that Anthony had the confidence to push home 5 bullets and a 2nd which was enough to pip Tony in the last heat (1 point)! Johan 2 points further back in 3rd. Really tight racing and it was great to see everyone doing turns as required in tight racing conditions!

Round 3

Light and A+ rigs were the order of the day Bob Whitehead was RO for the day, big welcome to Danny James who decided to bring his DF65 to the CC day (however felt a little underpowered with his OEM A rig!

Very Very close racing was conducted in a really strong fleet everyone had their chance at the top step in every heat....4 separate skippers had heat wins, usually results were products of sailing clean and reading the conditions Race 9 had Johan Tony and Anthony separated by 2 boat lengths and the scorer couldn't split Anthony or Tony on the line! Podium ended up Johan 3rd (narrowly missing 2nd by 1 point) Anthony 2nd with Tony a solid 1st with consistent sailing!

Round 4

We had 6 boats line up for the final DF65 club heat. We started the racing in SSE winds in perfect A+ winds with a few strong bullets pushing through. Norm had a blinder to start the day with a bullet in the first race. Kai Duffield showed how he is improving overtaking Tony downhill but had some bad luck with a few bullets of breeze costing him a good place in a few races, everyone made the comment of how it was good to see the orange boat pushing closer to the pack!

The racing was close all day with a lot of tactical choices with the puffs and luck with the nosedives downwind. Mark spent the day on his A rig and had some great flashes up the top! Johan changed down to an A rig for the last two Races but wasn't quite enough.

Four skippers had a win over the day showing the level of racing is getting tough at the top end. In the end Anthony ran away with a 4 point win over Tony who pushed hard all day. Johan kept nipping at their heals for a 3rd. Norm ended up 4th with Mark and Kai coming 5th and 6th with some bad luck over the day and a missed race each. Overall a great days racing!

Looking forward to what the state titles will bring in Dec.

Big thanks to Bob Whitehead, Jeff Watson for scoring and being race officer, thanks to Ian Dowsett for being racing standards observer. Also thanks to Anthony Wilson for the write-up!

Round 4

A South to South Westerly wind or around 8 to 12 knots kept most busy in determining which side of the course to take. Close racing was the order of the day with only 10 points separating first to fifth place.

Congratulations to John Brolese on taking out first place. Rules observance is slowly improving with just two protest requiring adjudication on the beach, other rule infringements were settled on the water during the respective races.

Thank you to Ian Dowsett for undertaking the RO duties. A pleasing number of competitors proving that Tuesday IOM racing is popular.

Round 8

Yesterday was our first race run under the rotating RO system. It worked very well: all 7 competitors found it fine. Those running races received average points for the races they ran as RO. Non Starters received DNC. There were no DNFs although we did, by agreement, restart one race where two boats became entrapped with each other about 2 minutes before the start. We did 11 races with 2 drops in cold sunny weather with a 12-16 knot Southerly shifting to SSW intermittently. Everyone used B rigs throughout.

John Brolese only sailed the first 6 races. Kevin Bowden missed the first 5 races.

We wondered whether the ROs could actually have sailed in the races they were race officering. This is done at Woorabinda an Paris Creek, with the RO managing the start and the heat winner recording the finishers.

Round 9

12 Starters, wind North varying to NNE and NNW, 6-16 knots with a few A rig nosedives.

About half started with A rigs, John Gratton, Dean Crichton and Dave Lane persisted, Alan Bessell, Dave Clayton and Alex Scapens changed to B. The rest used B rigs throughout.

But it didn’t seem to matter much. John Gratton had 3 wins and beat Graham Ingerson, who also had 3 wins, by just one point. Other race winners were Alex Scapens and Dean Crichton.

Thank to Alan Gold who ran the event and complemented the competitors for good bhsviour.

Round 4

From a very light northerly for the first race and then a brief delay for the wind to settle  to a Southerly tending SW.

Good racing was had by all with very few rules infringements.  All were settled on the water without any raised voices.   Greg Peake, sailing a IOM after a significant time, came home with the honours closely followed John G, David L and Alan B.

Good close results for a Handicap event.

Round 7

We believe this event was abandonded due to COVID.

Round 8

Many thanks to Peter Hendy who sent the results to me this afternoon: thank you Peter.

This event was held under the changed rules resulting from the recent Skippers’ meetings:

(a) Rotating ROs, explaining the average fractional scores for the missed races.

(b) Dropping of heats

(c) Potential for protests and redress but non applied on this day

Race officers were Tim Arland and Alan Gold, Alan doing the handicapping using his simple system.

Breeze was mostly NW, 6-8 knots.

Overall winner Dave Lane with one win, Tim Arland second with 2 wins, John Brolese third with one win. Other winners were Alan Bessell (3), Ian Dowsett (1), Ecio Marcel (1), Dean Crichton (1).

Round 9

Ian Dowsett officiated as PRO with rotating ROs for each heat determined by the finishing order in race 1. Those who stood out as RO received average points calculated from all the races they sailed. We will do the same thing for the scratch Gold Cup last heat (10) tomorrow.

You’ll see that Graham Ingerson had a clear victory with 3 wins. Ecio, 2nd and John Brolese, 3rd each had two wins. Other heat winners were Dean Crichton, Dve Lane and John Inverarity.

There was some doubt about how and where those acting as rotating ROs should start when they return to the next heat after the RO duty. After discussing it with Tony I think we should do what the S@LV group: ie their starting position is determined by their finishing position in the race immediately before their RO stint.

Thanks to PRO Ian and all the rotating ROs.

Round 10

The last heat of the TJ Handicap IOM Mid Week series was sailed on Tuesday 30th November in mostly light winds moving from North to NW to W to WSW, making for 4 course changes during the mornings sailing by ROs Bob Whitehead and Alan Gold, for which thanks to both. And especial thanks to Alan for looking after the handicapping, which he’s agreed to do again next year.

Graham Ingerson won the day with 5 wins, only 2 points ahead of the ever consistent David Lane (0 wins) who was 1 point ahead of Tim Arland (2 wins). Other heat winners were Alex Scapens (3 wins) who missed the first 3 races while installing a borrowed winch, and Dean Crichton.

Round 3

17 Boats faced the starter for the third heat of the Peter Rutger’s Trophy, ably run by Tony White and Alan Gold. Included were new members Simon and James How from ARCYRC who’ve joined our club because the Pat club has closed racing for the winter. Welcome James and Simon. Simon did very well 5th overall. James tried to sail both IOM and RM but sadly didn’t get better than 19 in any RM race and would have been better if he’d stuck to the IOM. Simon and James, what are your IOM and RM models please? And Daryle, what model is your fast 10 Rater?

The wind was mainly NNW to WNW requiring one course change during the day. Strength varied between maybe 8 and 20 knots. Rig changes were the order of the day, especially in the IOMs although Johan Bergkvist who won his second Rutger’s event in a row stuck with an A rig throughout on his Adriatic. He was consistent without winning a race. Others stuck with B rigs and did well. Tim Arland had a small rig on his Venom and came second, winning one race. Jeff Watson was third in his Blade 5, again consistent with no wins.

Other Race winners were John Gratton sailing Tony’s KanTwo, 4th & 1 win, Simon How IOM, 5th & 1 win, Chris Juttner 7th & 2 wins, Dave Lane, 8th & 1 win, Ecio Marcel 10th & 1 win and Peter Hendy 15th and 1 win.

There were a large number of collisions, partly because of control problems in big squally puffs downwind, partly because of difficulty judging crossing angles with the boats sailing directly away from skippers on starboard tack going towards mark 5 which was the windward mark for races 3-8. It was probably made worse because there was no offset buoy at mark 5 and easy for boats running back on starboard to collide with boats also beating on starboard. But penalties were generally done and there were no protests heard.

Round 4

Light NW breeze 5 knots 12 skippers contested the final round of our handicap event. The weather shifted to a westerly later in the day forcing a course change!

7 skippers managed heat wins showing that the handicapper was on the ball, scores wise 15 points spread the top 8 skippers in the field, with everyone running at the front at one time or another!

Alex Hayter forgot the starting time and joined late: Simon How - was sailing well however intermittent radio issues did ruin his day!

At one stage mid series: the score sheet showed a top 5 countback (all sharing the same score)

On the scoresheet David Lane IOM showed his light weather skills being near the top all day ending in 3rd: John Gratton with his Marblehead in 2nd.  Tim Arland managed to come out on the top step! 1st place and the top step well deserved in his A class!

Big thanks for Tony W and John I for running the day.

DF Challenge

Round 1

The DF classes had 10 starters for the resail of their first Challenge Handicap event which had to be postponed on the 2nd of May because of dead calm. PRO/Handicapper was Tony White with help from Chris Juttner; thanks to both. The breeze was steadier in the WNW and no course changes were required. Ten races were completed. It was good to see new members Kai Duffleld and Max Bourke again, and to see Alex Hayter having a go in the new Club DF95.

The winner overall was Anthony Wilson with an A+ rig on his 65 on a countback from Danny James who had an A rig on his 65. But the countback had to go down to 5th placings to separate the two. Third and fourth and fifth and sixth placings also require countbacks. This showed that Tony’s simple handicapping system worked well in sorting out the fleet.

All in all a good day, and pleasing to see so many boats on the water in the DF events.

Round 3

For the DF Challenge #3 there were 5 DF95s and 2 DF65s. The racing was run by Tony White and Chris Juttner. The wind remained largely NW but was a little lighter than in the morning, maybe 6-14 knots, and less shifty. The DF65s wore A rigs, the DF95s stayed with B rigs throughout. 10 races were completed.

Everyone except Norman Wallis (more later) won at least one race. John Moore (1st overall), Cameron White (3rd overall), Kai Duffield (4th overall) and Johan Bergkvist (6th overall) each won two races. Johan had problems with the windward offset mark being further to windward than he realised on two occasions. Norman Wallis started with 2 seconds but then had a disappearing boat needing the kayak for rescue and couldn’t get going again. Still that was better than his result in the Rutgers where he had an 11th in the first race and then a string of DNFs. It was really a Dave Morphett day for Norman with 3 finishes from a possible 18 starts.

Overall, a good days sailing for all.

Round 4

Light NW was served for the seven DF skippers that participated in Round 4 of the DF Challenge race. Our RO Tony W set a course starting at the beach extending towards, but not all the way to, mark 5. Residual chop without the corresponding wind made for tricky conditions for the three DF65 and to a lesser degree for the DF95. The wind strengthened towards the second half of the race, providing more boat speed.

John Gratton sailed the new SARYC club boat (44) and showed us all how it is done! Johan Bergkvist and Norm Wallis tried and failed to keep up in their DF95 while Anthony Wilson had his DF65 going nicely. Danny James sailed an A (not A+) rig. Chris Juttner dusted off his 65 and got it going after some technical issues.

One DF Challenge remains; #1 was re-scheduled for Aug 15.

If you want to sail the brand new club DF95 boat, then talk to Johan B.

DF65 Spring Trophy

Round 1

Eleven skippers took to the water in the first of five 2021 DF65 Spring Trophy races.

RO Alan Bessell and assistant Ian Dowsett set a 2 lap windward return course that proved perfect for the west to south-westerly breeze. The bottom gate doubled as the start line and presented the skippers with a tactical decision when rounding; go out to sea our stay along the beach? Heats were won and lost on that decision... The windshifts kept all skippers on their toes, but were not big enough to render the course misaligned.

A+ rigs were the choice for the day for those who had one with the rest of the fleet sailing in A rigs. One such boat was Max Bourke from S@LV who got a mid-race rig-setup tweak and started beating A+ rig boats after that; a second in heat 10 and a third in heat 4.

Also sailing at Tiranna Way for the first time were Cameron Jeffries from S@LV and Hayden James, we hope you enjoyed the afternoon! Danny and Hayden were unable to stay for the full 10 heats.

We note that Cameron White (age 11) beat his Dad (age a bit more than 11) in heat 9 and is climbing the results ladder with every race. As is Kai Duffield (age 12), with a some mid-fleet finishes and generally sailing with great focus and determination and learning quickly how it's all done.

It was tight at the top with four boats scoring multiple heat wins. In the end the first four boats were within three points of each other with first place awarded to Anthony Wilson on countback and Johan Bergkvist, Tony White and Jeff Ireland there to keep him honest. Competitive one-design racing at its best!

There were port/starboard incidents with penalties generally taken promptly. The first windward rounding mark provided entertainment for those not involved in the occational pile-up and lessons learnt for all.

Big thank-you to Alan and Ian for volunteering their time for us!

The first race of the DF95 Spring Trophy is next on July 12.

Round 2

The DF65s had 10 starters in their Spring Trophy #2 event. PRO was Jeff Watson with help from Ian Dowsett: thanks to you both. The breeze was steadier and only a couple of minor course changes were required. Ten races were completed plus one extra race which Johan filmed and will no doubt appear on the facebook page. It was good to see new members Kai Duffleld and Max Bourke.

Winner overall was Jeff Ireland: so good to see you back in action Jeff, with 16 points and 3 wins in the last 3 races when he hit his straps. Second was Tony White on 19 points and with 3 wins. Third on 23 points with 3 wins was Anthony Wilson. Johan Bergkvist was 4th on 24 points, Guy Wallis was 5th on 30 points with one win.

All in all a good day, and pleasing to see so many boats on the water in both the IOM and DF65 events.

Round 3

Abandoned.

Round 4

Five skippers were greeted by a shifty 10 kts westerly with puffs up to 15kts, which then moderated as the afternoon progressed. A fair bit of chop at start made for somewhat tricky conditions. The fleet settled on the A-rig pretty quick and stayed there.

The purpose of the Spring Trophy is to get boats on the water and a chance to practice. It was with that in mind that Kai got to start ahead of the fleet from heat 6 onwards and proved tricky to catch at times. Well sailed, Kai, today was hard.

And it was character-building for all with no clear runaway winner. All except Tony dropped a fifth place or worse. But in the end Tony pipped Anthony by a single point for first place!

Johan retired with a broken winch.

Thank you Tim for volunteering your time to RO this event!

Round 5

Five boats started in the fifth and final 2021 DF65 Spring Trophy. Skippers were greeted by a steady south to southwesterly wind just inside A+ rig range under a stunning sun. A little bit of chop but nothing the 65s couldn't handle.

Pete Duffield (Kai's dad) sailed #13 for a handful of races starting at the second race and got to know what makes a DF65 different to most other boats. He got the hang of it after a few races.

Tony ruled supreme at the top. The Johan/Pete combo managed second place. Danny retired with a burnt out rudder servo (a new orange one). Kai was also unable to sail all races.

Ian Dowsett volunteered to keep scores. Thank you, Ian!

DF95 Spring Trophy

Round 1

Great to see 5 boats come out and play, (for those who stayed home the weather was fine).

5 boats started on A-rigs in an oscillating NW to NE breeze - giving plenty to race for on the race course, unfortunately Johan was out before it began with rudder issues, Norm bought a sharpie to sail initially (we corrected that by loaning him a boat).

Max Bourke with his cleanskin DF95 showed some real turns of speed late in the day to get 4th overall. Tony 3rd after an abnormal day of getting into trouble. Anthony Wilson had a consistent day taking bullets when on offer for 2nd overall. Top spot goes to Jeff Ireland who sailed consistently to the conditions reading windshifts (earning the nickname "Frequent Flyer" when they turned to gold).

Thanks to Peter Hendy RO, Ian Dowsett and Alan Bessell for observing in tight racing; you would have thought 5 boats would have spread out a little to make it easier for scoring!

Round 2

The wind was a bit lighter and further in the left for the DF95 Spring Trophy Heat 2. Seven starters braved the conditions, run by Chris Juttner and Ian Dowsett.

Tony White was almost invincible, winning 7 of the 10 races and scoring only 9 points. Johan Bergkvist was second on 20 points, very consistent, with no wins. Anthony Wilson and Jeff Ireland tied on 21 points, Anthony winning on countback with 2 wins to Jeff’s 1 win. Kai Duffield sailed the new club DF95 and had a 2nd and a 3rd.

Round 3

Five boats were greeted by a 10-20 kts westerly with a fair bit of chop. The rain stayed away and the sun came out in the end. B and C rigs were the rigs of the day. The chop made tacking difficult, even with the smaller rigs.

Tony retired early with a cooked (there is no other way to describe it) winch.

Ecio sailed the club boat (which does not have a C-rig), but had to retire after six races with rudder gremlins.

David Clayton came by for a peek and found himself sailing Johan's boat for the race. B rig first, then a C rig.

Jeff I with a B rig was battling Jeff W with a C rig. The wind strength kept shifting up and down, but in the end Jeff I won the day with eight firsts. Well sailed!

Round 4

Seven boats sailed the fourth instalment of the 2021 DF95 Spring Trophy in perfect conditions; sunshine and a seabreeze that just started up as racing got underway so plenty of A rig wind and no more seastate than ripples. Two lap windward and return heats provided plenty of start practice. Most of the usual suspects lined up with Allan Carli sailing the club DF65 for the first six heats.

Four skippers scored heat wins and John I a second in the last heat, so it was anybody's race. Self-crowned Jeff "Prince of Penalties" Ireland got on the podium. Johan Bergkvist did what he could, but was unable to dislodge Tony White from the top spot.

The festivities were superbly managed by RO Tim Arland, who volunteered his time. Thank you, Tim! Penalties were taken when asked for and the afternoon provided one-design racing at it's best.

Round 5

In the fifth and final 2021 DF95 Spring Trophy the four boats were greeted by a flukey southerly wind with easterly spots. All boats launched with A rigs, but switched to B rigs pretty early. The wind increased as the race went on and most boats went to C rigs eventually.

Tony managed to burn through not one but two rudder servos and had to retire after some very impressive heats. Anthony struggled with his B and C rig pace and finished on 18 points. Johan scored firsts and seconds but lost out on countback to Jeff I who finished the day with three consecutive wins.

The skippers managed the race and scores with no RO.

Next Sunday in the fifth and final DF65 Spring Trophy race.
